How organic are these towels? Did you know that all organics are not created equal? This "next generation" fiber, is the first of its kind to meet the strictest standards for organic textiles set by Öko-Tex. Öko-Tex is a Swiss organization that carries out safety testing on manufactured products. These tests apply to the raw materials that are used, as well as the manufacturing process, which includes testing all chemicals used.
What’s important to you? The raw materials are sustainable, organic, and the bamboo is plantation grown. That means the bamboo is planted and harvested for this purpose, not harvested in the wild which could affect the habitat of the wild pandas. The towels are woven together with 75% bamboo and 25% organic cotton. Why? This combination is stronger than 100% bamboo by itself, creating a fabric that won’t pill and will withstand repeated washing and drying beautifully.
What about manufacturing? The manufacturer uses wind generated electricity to power the looms that weave the fabric and to turn that sturdy bamboo stalk into pulp, they use ozone bleach instead of the chlorine kind. We’ll get more into that in one of our articles for you chemistry types! The important part is that it uses half the energy, produces half the CO2 and needs very few chemicals compared with chlorine bleaching processes used to create other “organic” fabrics. These are truly sustainable manufacturing processes worth looking for.
After all this would they use harsh chemicals to create those gorgeous colors? You guessed it. Nandina towels are dyed after they're woven using only natural, organic, or low-impact dyes and through a four step purifying process, the water that comes out of the dye house is clear, clean and pure. No wonder you don't find these wonderful organic bamboo towels just anywhere!
