You want the very best bed linens for your money. After all, you'll spend one-third of your life sleeping. Why is Egyptian cotton important? Its known for its incredible softness. These sheets used to be carried in fine departments stores only, but they're now readily available in many stores. To be labeled Egyptian cotton, your sheet need only contain 1% Egyptian cotton, so be sure you look for 100% for the best quality. What's the difference between Pima and Egyptian cotton? Pima is a domestic cotton and is a competitor of Egyptian cotton. Supima is a licensed name that indicates a product is made from 100% pima cotton.
Fiber length is another quality indicator, although most packaging doesn't usually include this information. A long fiber used in sheet construction will give the sheet softness and strength. Pima and some Egyptian cotton sheets can be found with long fiber content.
Thread count also says a lot about the make up of your sheets. Thread count tells you how many threads are woven together per square inch. More is not necessarily better. A thread count that's higher than about 400 can only be created with multi-ply thread. Again, that's not usually on the manufacturer's label. If the high thread count is combined with a low fiber length, that's when you'll find the sheet feeling heavier and perhaps less desirable, especially on sensitive skin.
Why don't we recommend fabric softeners? Unless you're using an organic fabric softner, you're adding non-organics and chemicals to the organic fibers. Those things you're trying to get rid of are now coating the organic fibers of your sheets, which won't allow them to breathe and remain absorbent. So, save some money on the fabric softners and just wash in warm water and dry on the warm cycle to prevent static build up.
